About Us Meaning of "Universitas Rei"

Cover of "Treatise on the immortality of the soul" (1503) Rodrigo Fernandez de Santaella, founder of the University of Seville
The consequences of the emergence of the university are the birth of a group of teachers, priests and laity, the church trusted the teaching of revealed doctrine, previously entrusted to the church hierarchy. Now his legal title belongs to the university corporation.
There are facts in the Middle Ages that mark a new development: the emergence of the university to train young people in the professions "clerical", theology, law and medicine, as major powers, as junior faculty of arts or philosophy (based on all possible wisdom according to the Greeks). Were institutions of Christendom, were recognized by a papal bull, his language was Latin and the knowledge they taught were hinged to the Catholic conception of the world and man. His methods of reasoning and discussion were scholastics.
But what I want to emphasize is that "University" at the source did not indicate a think tank but a unionization or "union" that protected corporate or partnership interests of people dedicated to the business of learning.
University Understood as a generator of knowledge, he attributed the character of "Alma Mater" in the sense of generating and transforming the man for the work of science and knowledge.
The origin of the term
The word "university" comes from the Latin UNIVERSITAS abstract noun formed on the adjective universus-A-UM ("all", "integer", "universal"), derived at a time of unus- A-UM ("one").
UNIVERSITAS In medieval Latin was used originally to designate any community or corporation considered in its collective aspect. When used in its modern sense denoting a body dedicated to teaching and education required the addition of a supplement to round out its meaning "UNIVERSITAS magistrorum scholarium ET," for example:
"City school teacher is et to date with some Logar et voluntat learning with understanding of knowledge" (Partid. II, Chapter XXXI , Act 1.)
the end of the fourteenth century, the word came into use, meaning it has today. However, the older term and continued to be used for a long time was to STUDIUM or Studium Generale.
The triumph of the word with its present meaning UNIVERSITAS not arrive until the Renaissance. It is clear that the word universitas, consisting of the elements unus, one unum, and pour, vertere, Versum, expresses a global vision of all reality.
The term universitas and Latin was used to describe any set of units or all of one thing: universitas navis was the entire ship, universitas orationis, the entire speech, universitas humani generis, the whole of mankind.
In the year 533, in the Digest of Justinian, universitas longer appears to mean group, corporation, union, community, school, society, to this significant area bears the name of universities which flourished in the Middle Ages stocks set to defend common interests formed a legal unit.
In Catalonia, from the twelfth century and later in other states of the Crown of Aragon, the municipalities were known by the name of universities. And it was this concept of legal person formed by a plurality and diversity of individuals, from which came the name for groups of university students and teachers.
Consider what says the first dictionary of the English language, Covarrubias, 1611:
UNIVERSITY:
"Vale community and City Council people and things, and because in general schools attended by students of all parties, called universities, as University of Salamanca, Alcalá, etc.
universities also call each other certain people that have bond and friendship "
Sebastián de Covarrubias Orozco (1539-1613)" Treasure of the English language or English, Madrid, 1611Ed. Castalia, 1995
In the last meaning of Covarrubias is reference to that during the Middle Ages, also called "universities" to a group of villages or neighborhoods that were united by common interests under a single legal representation.
The first significant area bears the name of universities, ie as guilds. The popes and kings had great interest in the creation and protection of these new entities. Were granted privileges and jurisdiction of their own, just as if they were cities and towns.
were politically and administratively independent of the city where they were (usually outside) and serious problems in their relations with local authorities both civil and ecclesiastical, who wanted to take them under his control. It was not uncommon even mudasen city that they were dissatisfied. Cambridge University was born as disintegration of Oxford, because of the discontent of a group of students, who emigrated. The University of Paris, for example, the prototype along with medieval Bologna University, was a legal unit formed four faculties: three higher (Theology, Canon Law, Medicine) and lower the Arts, divided into four nations, which included both teachers and students.
Rei The term comes from the Latin res, meaning thing.
